Adverbs

This is a word that is used to modify (describe) or qualify an adjective, a verb or verbal, or another adverb. Adverbs answer these questions: Where? When? Why? How? To what degree? Under what conditions?

    Types of Adverbs

    Adverbs are categorised into different types according to their functions when used in a sentence. Given below are the different types of adverbs.

    • Adverbs of Manner
    • Adverbs of Time
    • Adverbs of Place
    • Adverbs of Frequency
    • Adverbs of Degree
    • Conjunctive Adverbs
    1. Adverbs of Manner

    These tell us how an action is done. If you want to describe a movement, you use an adverb of manner.

    • Examples: Quickly, loudly, happily, carefully.
    • Sentence: The cat ran quickly across the yard
    2. Adverbs of Time

    These tell us when something happens. They help us keep track of the schedule!

    • Examples: Now, yesterday, soon, tomorrow.
    • Sentence: We are going to the park tomorrow.
    3. Adverbs of Place

    These tell us where the action is happening.

    • Johnn Examples: Here, there, everywhere, outside.y rode his bike to school.
    • Sentence: It is sunny outside.
    4. Adverbs of Frequency

    These tell us how often something happens. They describe a habit.

    • Examples: Always, sometimes, never, rarely.
    • Sentence: I always brush my teeth before bed.
    5. Adverbs of Degree

    These tell us the intensity or "how much" of a feeling or action. They make words stronger or weaker.

    • Examples: Very, too, almost, extremely.
    • Sentence: The soup is too hot to eat.
    6. Conjunctive Adverbs

    These act like "bridge" words. They connect two complete ideas together.

    • Examples: However, therefore, also, meanwhile.
    • Sentence: I wanted to go for a swim; however, it started to rain.
